Espresso

- prepared under pressure for an intense flavour

Espresso roasts are perfect for all brewing methods that use pressure or high extraction power. They are ideal if you love strong coffee with a full body, a thick crema and an intense aroma. Espresso-roasted coffee beans really come into their own in a portafilter: You can precisely adjust the grind size, coffee quantity and extraction time to create an espresso with notes of chocolate, nuts, caramel or fruit.

Espresso beans also work very well in fully automatic coffee machines, as they provide sufficient sweetness, body and intensity to ensure your espresso, café crème or milk-based drink doesn’t taste thin or sour. Espresso roasts are also an excellent choice for stovetop coffee makers. They produce a strong, aromatic coffee with a pleasant depth. Whether you use a portafilter, a fully automatic machine or a stovetop coffee maker: espresso beans are the perfect foundation for an intense coffee experience.

What are the differences & What suits you best?

Roast Level Explained: Espresso, Omni-Roast, or Coffee?

Espresso roasts primarily differ from classic coffee roasts and omni-roasts in their roast profile. While filter coffees are often roasted lighter to highlight delicate acids, floral notes, and fruity aromas, espresso beans are usually roasted longer and more developed. This creates more body, sweetness, and roast aromas. The acidity is more gently integrated, ensuring the espresso tastes balanced with a short extraction time and preparation under pressure.

A good espresso does not have to be dark or bitter. The optimal development of the bean is crucial. A carefully roasted espresso bean can be evenly extracted in a portafilter, automatic machine, or Moka pot, and tastes neither flat nor unpleasantly sour or burnt.

Blends are also particularly popular for espresso. They combine different coffee varieties or origins to create a stable, well-rounded flavor profile – for example, with chocolatey, nutty, or slightly fruity notes. Single-origin espressos, on the other hand, often display a more individual character. Omni-roasts are intended to work both as filter coffee and espresso, but remain a compromise. A targeted espresso roast is specifically tailored for pressure brewing and usually delivers more body, crema, and balance.

The Perfect Espresso from Your Portafilter Machine

Perfect Espresso Preparation with a Portafilter Machine

With a portafilter, you can get the most out of your espresso beans. Grind size, dosage, brew ratio, and extraction time are crucial.

The grind size should be fine, but not so fine that the espresso only drips. If it runs too fast, the grind is usually too coarse. If it runs too slowly, you should grind a little coarser.

A brew ratio of 1:2 is a good starting point: 18 grams of coffee grounds yield about 36 grams of espresso in 25 to 30 seconds. You can adjust these values depending on the bean and your taste. For more body, choose a shorter ratio; for more clarity and sweetness, a slightly longer one.

Make sure to distribute the coffee grounds evenly in the portafilter and tamp cleanly. This prevents channeling, where the water flows unevenly through the coffee bed. If your espresso tastes sour or thin, grind finer or extend the extraction time. If it tastes bitter or dry, grind a little coarser or shorten the extraction time.

Our Kaffanero Espressi - The right espresso for everyone

What makes Kaffanero Espresso special

Kaffanero Espresso stands for carefully selected coffee beans, gentle roasting, and authentic flavor instead of industrial mass production. The difference begins with the selection of green coffees: many beans are carefully chosen, sometimes directly traded, and developed specifically for espresso. This results in roasts that consistently impress in portafilter machines, fully automatic machines, and stovetop mokapots.

Instead of roasting the beans very quickly and at high temperatures, Kaffanero relies on gentle roasting and optimal development. This creates more sweetness, body, and balance, without the espresso tasting burnt, bitter, or flat. Every roast aims to bring out the best in the bean.

Furthermore, at Kaffanero, you not only get espresso beans but also suitable advice. Whether you prefer it classically chocolatey, nutty, strong, or a bit fruitier: together, you'll find the espresso that suits you, your machine, and your taste preferences.
